Tours begin and end outside the Scottish Poetry Library, an award-winning, purpose-built poetry library which opened in 1999, and which houses a collection of Scottish and international poetry. The Library itself is open Monday – Thursday, 10am to 3pm.

The venue is the starting point for a walking tour around the Canongate. Most of the walk is along pavements and footpaths, which can be uneven underfoot, and there are also some steps
